Uchouten Kazoku is structured like a slice of life, with a larger, super-plot stretching above all the smaller, episodic (and heart-warming) subplots. Without any spoilers that aren't dealt with in the first couple minutes of the first episode, the series deals with tanuki, raccon-like creatures that can transform into myriad of things at will. For those who watched Pom Poko, Uchouten Kazoku feels quite familiar already. However, it goes much deeper into the relationships between humans and tanuki, how humans oppress and hunt the tanuki, and zeroes in on one such tragedy that occurs when humans succeed. Uchouten Kazoku is really something you just sit down in bed and watch to relax. Imagine complexity and serenity blended into one satisfying and very very very relaxing experience (yet also gripping) and you get Uchouten Kazoku. With a strong story, mediocre art, and masterful sound, characters and character development, Uchouten Kazoku is really a must see hidden gem for this summer and all time. At only three episodes right now, it can only get better from here.
