We have met, for each of us to walk forward.
Takao, who is training to become a shoemaker, skipped school and is sketching shoes in a Japanese-style garden. He meets a mysterious woman, Yukino, who is older than him. Then, without arranging the times, the two start to see each other again and again, but only on rainy days. They deepen their relationship and open up to each other. But the end of the rainy season soon approaches...
There is a fair amount of symbolism going on throughout the movie, most of which is through the rain. Shinkai has gone on record saying that he intended for the rain and weather to not only be a plot device, but to be one of the main characters and it shows. There are multiple points throughout the movie where the weather coincides with events, informing us how one character views the other without just blatantly having it be said. The viewpoints switch throughout the movie and it never feels jarring or out of place. The movie is, as said above, really freaking pretty. The character designs and animation compared to the backgrounds are rather simplistic, seeming to stand out from their surroundings and while this can be rather jarring in many other works, here it seems to work. On top of this, whereas most anime simply use two shades for colouring of skin, one for light, one for shadow, Shinkai also added a greenish-blue tinge in many scenes to parts of characters, where the sunlight is reflecting off of the puddles and water prevalent throughout much of the movie. The soundtrack is beautiful, being quiet and conserved where needed to being loud and in your face when the pace picks up. It accompanies the movie perfectly. Overall, this is a great movie that anyone can enjoy. (chinlamp@mal)
